Forty Caddies in dispute with Milford Golf Course

I wrote recently about caddie’s dispute with Milford Golf Course. They have complained that they have not been paid by Managing Director from Milford Golf Course Mr. Zo Zu Jin since October 2008 despite agreeing contract rates with him.

Caddy Somkid Sookpul and five other caddies came see me at my office on the 5th of January 2009. After hearing their complaint I have discussed their case with Khun Sukit Kruthkong and then I have contacted Chief Officer from the Welfare and Consumer Protection Department Khun Itiporn Laovanit and Vice Governor Pisit Soontrirat.

On Thursday 08 January 2009 Khun Itiporn Laovanit and Deputy Khun Sunan Petchpoo have arrived to Hua Hin and went straight away to the Milford Golf Course in the morning. The forty caddies were waiting him in front of the Milford Clubhouse. Mr. Zo Zu Jin met with the government officials and the caddies. After one hour negotiations Mr. Zo Zu Ji has agreed to pay the outstanding money to the caddies by 5 p.m via ATM and even keep the caddies working at Milford Golf Course.

At 5pm however Mr. Zo Zu Jin has changed his mind again and has decided to pay each caddy one thousand baht and 160 baht for one round of 18 holes and keep forty caddies working until 10th January only. As a result of this the caddies were paid much less then expected. For example Khun Somkid Sookpul has received only 3,000 baht per week and will be not hired again.

Many caddies have told me today (9th January) that this morning Mr. Zo Zu Jin was very abusive, rude and very rough towards them. He has treated them without any respect for their work. Mr. Zo Zu Jin is Korean national and came to run business in Thailand but didn't follow labour law in this country. This type of people should be dealt with appropriately by government officials and his visa should not be extended in my opinion.
