More than Bt20 million was spent to stage the Centennial match between former world No 1s Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams in Hua Hin on January 2. Co-hosted by the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand and the city of Hua Hin, the exhibition match has commemorated the 100th anniversary of Hua Hin.
In the Hua Hin exhibition match Maria Sharapova of Russia defeated American Venus Williams 6-3 6-4 on Saturday. It took the Russian less than an hour and a half to see off the world number six. In hot conditions, Sharapova broke Williams three times to take the first set in 49 minutes. harapova led 5-1 at one point in the first set. The second set was on serve until the final game when Williams missed two forehands to lose the match.
Both the players struggled to adapt to the local conditions and committed too many errors. Sharapova, has registered her first win over the American since 2007. For both the players it was a good test for preparation prior to the Australian Open Grand Slam during 18 - 31 January 2010.
