The Lotus Swamp at Sam Roi Yot

Lotus SwampiconThe Lotus Swamp is situated over an area of approximately 500 rai in the freshwater marshland of Sam Roi Yot National Park. Around the Lotus Swamp there are nature trails in the form of long wooden bridges that strech out toward the center of the swamp. From here, visitors can observe the flocks of water birds and fish, as well as admire the nelumbo Nucifera Lotus.

However, anyone who really wants to enjoy the dense fields of lotus at close hand should take one of the available punts out beyond the central pavilion into the 'Bung Yai' or main swamp. These non-motorised punts are environmentally friendly as they both conserve energy and reduce noise polution. Whilst on the boat, you will come accross countless kinds of aquatic flora, including a wide assortment of reeds and bulrushes, as well as a diverse variety of birdlife. There are also many strains of lotus, including water lilies.

The best time to visit the lotus swamp will be during April, which is the period when most of the lotuses are in full bloom. For visitors with a penchant for birdwatching, they can set up and train theier binoculars at any of the vantage points along the nature trails or at the observatory. There are up to 296 different species of local and migratory birds to be found, including the purple heron, lesser whistling duck, garganey, little ringed plover, marsh sandpiper, rufous-necked stint, Eastern curlew, Asiatic dowitcher, slaty breastedrail, purple swamphen, peregrine falcon, Malaysian plover, white-bellied sea eagle and woodpeckers, etc.

The ideal time for oberving the migratory birds is between November and February each year and birdwatchers should come armed with their own essential equipment, such as a pair of binoculars. Besides this, as a backdrop to the lotus swamp , there are cliff-like mountains, covered in a green blanket of tall trees rising dramatically towards the sky. When shrouded by the early morning mist, the whole area becomes an even more mesmerising setting.

Location

The Lotus Swamp at Sam Roi Yot is about 9 kilometres from Phetchkasem Road, near the Rong je Lui Im Yi factory. Branch of the main Phetchkasem Road between the 275-276 kilometre stone in Amphoe Sam Roi Yot district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.
