During the meeting the environment ministers pledged to remain alert and continue monitor the haze situation in the region during El Nino. They were hopeful that in the southern part of the region with the onset of the rainy season in November the haze would gradually disappear there. However drier conditions are expected return to the Mekong sub-region in late 2009 as the northeast monsoon sets in. This is likely to lead to increase of haze hotspots in the region. They have proposed establishment of an ASEAN working group on climate change.
